1900 RECORD OF HEMP'S FIBRE QUALITY
Samuel Boyce, a New York farmer and businessman, wrote a treatise on hemp, called HEMP, in which he noted:
worked by hand, hemp furnishes a thread of extreme fineness almost equalling silk, much finer than cotton, and much finer than can be produced by the present imperfect mechanical methods, excepting as manipulated upon 'spun-silk', or on mohair machinery. Lace threads are spun from hemp by hand to the fineness of 600 miles for each two and one-half pounds of hemp fiber. (pp. 48-49)
