HEMP PAPER RECIPE NOTES #1
This is the first of a series of hemp paper recipe notes, featuring recipes from the US government record of experiments that took place in 1915 at Cumberland Mills in Maine.
Cook No. 141. Hemp tow from Judge Harry Olson, Chicago, Ill. Nov. 15, 1910.
310 lbs. at 91.2% bone dry = 282 lbs. bone dry.
19.1% NaOH = 54.0 lbs. = 70.1 gallons.
92.4 gms. per litre: 89.2% causticity.
Cook 2 1/2 hours at 90-95 lbs.; wood sufficiently cooked.
Stock: 726 lbs. at 21.39% bone dry = 155 lbs. bone dry.
Yield of total fiber + 54.9% of bone-dry tow.
NaOH added 19.1%
NaOH consumed 11.6%
NaOH excess 7.5%
