HEMP PAPER RECIPE NOTES #2
This is the second part of the notes for a batch made in 1915 in Maine, using hemp hurds. The first part of this was posted on 3 August, 2006 on this site. That and other posts on hemp paper making can be brought up with a word search instantly.
Cook No. 142. Hemp tow from Judge Harry Olson of Illinois, grown in 1910.
315 lbs. at 89.03% bone dry = 280 lbs. bone dry
21.0% NaOH = 59.0 lbs. = 76.6 gallons.
92.4 gms. per liter: 89.6% causticity.
Cook about 21/2 hours at 90 lbs. Stock same as Cook 141.
Stock: by misunderstanding not weighed or sampled.
NaOH added 21.0
NaOH consumed 15.7
NaOH excess 5.3
The final process, utilising both this and the previous cook, was as follows:
Machine Run No. 73
Stock from Cooks 141 and 142. 310 lbs. bone dry.
Brush hard 6 hours, using washer 4 hours.
Bleach with 8.2% bleach.
Beat 7 hours, gradually lowering the roll to very hard brush.
Furnish:
Clay 30 lbs. = 9.6%
Size 12 lbs. = 3.8%
Alum 14 lbs. = 4.5%
Machines speed 26 ft.; deckles 28 inches; reeled sheet 27 inches.
Full calendar stock. Jordan on hard.
No cockle, no breaks, run very good; slow stock.
Roll 27" 248 lbs.
Roll 25" 230 lbs.
