Minawear vs. MiNaWear: sartorial plagiarism

Plagiarism, the sincerest form of flattery, like flattery, is not always welcome; especially when someone is trying to make a living on an original concept, and someone comes along and copies it. There is the nasty case in New York where a plant shop, named Plant House, after 30 years of operations, had their name and logo and business card designg copied exactly by some so-called artists a block away who decided for some reason that their gallery ought to be called 'Planthouse.' Not much in the way of talented botanical illustration to be found on their walls, or much in the way of talented anything but plagiarism. But then again, the New York 'art scene' is so full of copying that the FBI just has to knock on the door of these 'artists' to make a bust. $80million fraud here, $100million there, plagiarism can be great gain.
But is a real loss to real people, like Mina Hegaard of Minawear - whose logo - see below - was copied, along with her name, by a Costa Rican company claiming to be MiNaWear.


Now see the copycat plagiarists who are too stupid to come up with anything original or do a search on the internet: even the font style is copied from the real Minawear - which goes back to the 1990s.
What a scam! Mina Hegaard has sent a cease and desist letter to these people, and should by rights sue them for lost business as a result of this.

Houdek Hemp House to open in Appleton, Wisconsin

A new hemp shop is to open in Appleton, Wisconsin, the town famous for Senator Joe McCarthey. It happens to be the town from where Mina Hegaard's dad is from, she and I have been there on occasion - and naturally, Wisconsin was a hemp growing state, perhaps the last state to have grown hemp legally in the US as they continued on after WWII.

Houdek Hemp House is the novel business taking 201 W. College Ave. The store will be at the corner of Appleton Street in the building that previously housed The Vintage Garden, which moved down the street, and before that Avenue Hair Design.
The store is owned by Joe and Penny Houdek, which is pronounced hoe-deck. They signed a lease Wednesday and plan to open sometime in May.
Joe Houdek knows he has some explaining to do when he tells people about the store.
“Some people look at me very strangely,” he said. “They ask ‘Are you going to sell drugs?’ There will be no drugs or paraphernalia. We’re primarily selling hemp clothing for men and women. Hemp has gotten a bad rap because of marijuana. Hemp is not marijuana, but they’re in the same family and the leaf is almost identical. There’s no THC (marijuana’s intoxicating ingredient) in hemp.”
Hemp is legal to import but not to grow in the U.S. It’s currently grown in China, Canada, Romania and Australia.
Houdek says clothing made with the fiber “breathes better than cotton and is very durable.” He says its a sustainable, eco-friendly fiber.
Besides clothing, the store will have hemp-based products including handbags, hats, belts, pet leashes and collars, bulk seed and oil.
“I believe it’s the most beneficial plant on earth,” Houdek said. “It’s something that I’m passionate about. I truly believe that it’s only a matter of time before we allow farmers to grow hemp in this country. I want to be on the forefront of that. I see it as the future.”

Hawaii, which has just launched a bill to legalise medical marijuana, joining the tide of states that are doing so, has a very nice hemp outlet in Maui, these pictures bring back a happy childhood memory of trying to learn to surf...which I never did, I was way too nerd for such things!

NEWS FROM HEMPORIUM

From South Africa we received word on the latest in hemp. Tony Budden of Hemporium was at the Grahamstown Festival, the Natural and Organics Products Expo at the Capetown International Convention Centre and Rocking the Daisies Green Music Festival. This year the press has picked up on their work, giving them space in local papers and top magazines such as Men's Health and Cosmo. Television exposure included an insert on SABC 3's "Free Spirit."

Their product range continues to expand, with new items including a range of ozonated healing gels developed by Dr Julian Holmes and 100% hemp denim jeans. Not only has the Hemporium label grown, but its range of outsourced products has increased as well. Clothes, cosmetics, accessories and books can all be found in their high street shop and online.

Hemporium products can also be found in a number of other stockists, including the newly added Wellness Warehouse chain, initially launched on Kloof Street, Dr Julian Holmes, Cape Town, but now expanded to Heathway in Johannesburg and Cavendish Links in Claremont.
